The Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (uNAVSA) (Liên Hội Sinh Viên Việt Nam Bắc Mỹ Châu), which had many members participating at the Summit as delegates and volunteers, has signed on to be a strategic partner of BPSOS' '500 in 5 Years' Leadership Development Initiative.
Per UNAVSA President Dan Huynh, UNAVSA Executive Board voted unanimously to support the alliance. "We are all very excited to be formally a part of this great initiative and prepared as an organization to do what needs to be done to ensure its success," said Huynh.
UNAVSA-8 Conference takes place in Denver, Colorado this year from July 28-31.

At the Inaugural National Summit of Vietnamese American Leaders, held at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC on July 2, 2011, over two hundred leaders, with a large proportion from the second generation of Vietnamese Americans, joined hands to develop a national platform to advance the community in the next decade.
Nearly 250 delegates from 20 states participated in three tracks to draft national strategies for community empowerment in all three sectors of society: political, economic, and social. “To build a strong foundation for our future in America, we need effective and committed leaders in all three sectors and sustainable civic institutions – both of which are currently lacking in our community,” said Shandon Phan, Chair of the Summit’s Organizing Committee.

Any significant endeavor must start with the right leaders.
To advance the Vietnamese American community, we need leaders who can build bridges across cultures and generations, and who can develop long-lasting and self-sustaining institutions.

Hội nghị được sự tham dự của hơn 200 bạn trẻ từ một số tiểu bang có đông người Việt cư ngụ trên nước Mỹ. Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Đình Thắng, Giám đốc điều hành Ủy ban Cứu người Vượt biển, cơ quan đứng ra tổ chức hội nghị cho biết lý do triệu tập hội nghị này:
“Cộng đồng người Việt trong suốt 36 năm qua đã chú ý nhiều đến vấn đề sinh tồn, gầy dựng lại cuộc sống nhiều hơn là quan tâm đến tương lai. Nhưng bây giờ là thời điểm để bắt đầu đặt nền móng cho tương lai, chuẩn bị cho thế hệ tiếp nối, nếu không e rằng quá trễ bởi vì thế hệ chủ lực 36 năm qua, những người qua bên này tâm hồn vẫn còn gắn bó với cộng đồng, đất nước, nhưng những người trẻ thế hệ tiếp nối không có sự gắn bó đó. Nếu chúng ta không chuẩn bị cho họ ý thức về cộng đồng, về quê hương thì e rằng họ sẽ không còn là nhịp cầu nối liền dòng chính Hoa Kỳ và cộng đồng của mình. Thứ hai là tất cả những tài năng đó sẽ tản mác đi hết, không được gìn giữ lại để bồi đắp cho những tài nguyên chung của cộng đồng như vậy chúng ta sẽ thất thoát rất nhiều nhân tài, những chất xám của cộng đồng của mình.”

The Summit
The Summit is the first ever national gathering of Vietnamese American leaders of various generations in all three sectors to develop a national platform of community empowerment for the next decade. Altogether, approx. 250 delegates from 20 states attended this first summit.
